Is a wood stove the right heat for your home?
A wood stove heats without electricity, so it keeps working when the power goes out. You load it by hand and clear the ash, and the chimney needs cleaning once a year. In return you get heat you control, fuel you can buy locally, and a stove that works in a storm.
That trade — a bit of work for independence from the grid — is the whole decision. If it suits you, the rest is picking a stove sized to the room and getting it installed properly.

Wood, gas or pellet: which stove should you buy?
Wood runs with no electricity and costs least to feed if you have access to firewood. Gas gives you a thermostat and the least work. Pellets sit between the two, with automated running and very low ash. The right answer depends on how much handling you want.
| Wood | Gas | Pellet | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fuel | Cordwood, loaded by hand | Natural gas or propane | Hardwood pellets in 40 lb or 23.8 lb bags |
| Runs in a power cut | Yes, unless it has the fan option | Yes, with battery backup | No — it needs electricity |
| Temperature control | By how you load and damper it | Wall thermostat, or an optional remote | Programmable settings; thermostat optional |
| Ash and cleaning | Ash removal plus a yearly chimney clean | The most convenient of the three | Extremely low ash |

What happens when you buy one
- We work out which stove fits
One to one, in the showroom. The size of the room and how you want to run it decide the stove, and we answer the questions as they come up rather than at the end.
- Installation, usually in a day
Factory-trained technicians do every installation. Jeff, the owner, has been on every single one since 2006 except one during Covid. The crew protects the areas of your home they work through.
- Wood School
Jeff goes over the stove with you after the install — how to run it safely, how to get the heat out of it, what to watch for. Nobody is left to work it out from the manual.
- Cleanings, each year
We clean and service the stoves we installed. A wood cleaning covers the inner workings and all the venting from the stove to the end cap. Book between 1 April and 15 July for early pricing.

Wood stove questions we get asked
Do wood stoves work when the power goes out?
Yes, as long as it has no fan option fitted. The fire itself needs no electricity, so it keeps heating through an outage. That independence is one of the main reasons Hudson Valley homes choose wood over systems that stop when the power does.
What wood stove brands does Green Heat carry?
Green Heat is a dealer for Lopi, Osburn and MF Fire. Models on the floor have included the Lopi Evergreen, the Osburn Matrix and the MF Fire Nova 2. Stock changes through the season, so call before you drive out.
Who installs the stove, and how long does it take?
Factory-trained technicians, and the install is usually finished in one day. Jeff, the owner, has been on every single installation since 2006 except one during Covid. The crew protects the areas of your home they work through.
What is Wood School?
After every installation Jeff walks you through your stove — how to run it safely, how to get the most heat from it, and what to watch for. Nobody is left working it out from a manual. It is part of the install, not an extra.
Does Green Heat clean and service wood stoves?
Yes, on stoves we installed. A wood cleaning is a deep clean of the inner workings plus all the venting from the stove to the end cap. Book between 1 April and 15 July for early pricing — rates rise considerably after the 15th.
How much upkeep does a wood stove need?
Routine ash removal, and a chimney cleaning each year. That is the trade for heat that runs without electricity and fuel you can buy locally. Skipping the chimney clean is what causes creosote build-up and chimney fires.
What are the downsides of a wood stove?
Work, mostly. You load it by hand, clear the ash, and have the chimney cleaned each year — skip that last one and creosote builds up, which is what causes chimney fires. You also need somewhere dry to keep wood. If none of that appeals, look at gas.
Can you cook on a wood stove?
On many models, yes — a wood stove can heat the room and cook at the same time, which is part of why they suit homes that lose power in winter. Whether a particular stove is built for it depends on the model, so ask.
Where can I see wood stoves near me?
The Green Heat showroom is at 3815 Main Street, Stone Ridge, NY 12484, open Tuesday to Friday. We sell and install across Ulster, Dutchess, Greene, Columbia, Sullivan and Orange Counties.
